ABOUT THE CENTER
Communications Director
Full time

General position overview:
The Center seeks a Communications Director (Director) to help oversee all printed, email, Web, and new media communications for the Center; develop and direct major media campaigns; work with staff to communicate the Center’s work; and foster strong relationships with media, colleagues, and supporters. The Director will be supervised by the Center’s executive team; work closely with all conservation and administrative program directors; and help supervise media, Web, and development staff. The ideal candidate will be at the top of their field.
Main duties:
- Coordinate the Center’s communication work at the staff and organization level
- Ensure consistent use of the organization’s unique brand internally and externally
- Develop short- and long-term media campaigns, assist staff’s media efforts
- Work with conservation staff on press releases, media advisories, announcements
- Review and guide the tone and content of the Center’s Web site, increase multimedia aspects of the site, develop the site as a stronger media tool
- Work with the Center’s media, Web, and fundraising staff and databases to enhance communications and improve tracking and analysis
- Follow up on multimedia offers and communication opportunities
- Manage and support the Center’s online activities — emails, appeals, cultivation, social media, PSAs
- Author press releases, Center statements, and fundraising copy, as needed
- Supervise and help coordinate communication schedule
- Assist Center staff in producing weekly e-newsletter
Essential qualities, qualifications, and skills:
- Minimum bachelor's degree
- Four years related work and/or volunteer experience in communications, creation and tracking of media, and fundraising campaigns preferred
- Desire to work in a senior-level, highly committed position
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Dynamic and assertive personality
- Demonstrated excellence in writing
- Excellent computer, software, and database skills; Internet savvy
- Ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment, strong group work skills
- Common sense, creativity, and ability to make decisions independently; self-starter
- Enthusiasm for protecting imperiled plants, animals, and wildlands
- Management experience preferred
- Background in organizing, or past experience with environmental, nonprofit, or advocacy groups preferred

Online Organizer

General position overview:
The Online Organizer is a full-time, fast-paced, creative, and dynamic communications position with wide-ranging responsibilities and projects. The position supports the Center’s activism and fundraising using marketing sensibilities to maintain loyal relationships with existing supporters and to seek out new individuals to support the Center’s work — by crafting and sending emails, driving traffic to the Center’s Web site, utilizing online networking and new media resources, and developing a strong online community for the Center. This will require strategic analysis, thoughtful tracking and reporting, creativity, innovation, and the independent and collaborative execution of new projects. The Online Organizer is also a project manager, working internally and externally with staff, contractors, and third parties.
Main duties:
- Assist staff in planning and implementation of online campaigns to reach Center’s fundraising and advocacy goals
- Coordinate and assist with the growth, maintenance, and tracking of the Center’s electronic constituents in online database, including some coordination with separate membership database
- Track and report on progress for campaigns and projects
- Write for email communications, Web site, e-newsletters and other projects, as needed
- Manage Center’s presence on social networking Web sites
- Research and implement new ideas to improve the marketability of the Center’s Web site and increase traffic
- Identify internal and external online activism and giving trends and apply to new projects
- Work with code-programming contractors as needed in order to develop Web, database, and mobile device applications
- Follow best-practice standards for online communication and support other development and communications staff to do the same
Essential qualities, qualifications, and skills:
- Minimum associate's or bachelor's degree
- Two to four years related work and/or volunteer experience in marketing/communications, including the creation and maintenance of online content
- Background in organizing, or past experience with environmental, nonprofit or advocacy groups preferred
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated personal interest in online communications, social networking, and activism
- Excellent computer, software, and database skills; internet savviness
- Basic understanding of HTML and/or other Web authoring languages, graphics and file types
- Ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment

Staff Scientist — Alaska and Arctic Protection

General position overview:
The Center seeks a full-time Staff Scientist to work on biodiversity protection issues in and affecting Alaska and the Arctic. Particular emphasis of the Staff Scientist position will be advocating for the protection of vulnerable Arctic and sub-Arctic species — such as polar bears and other ice-dependent marine mammals, seabirds, and rare plants — in the face of global warming, offshore oil and gas development, industrial fishing, shipping, and other emerging threats. The Staff Scientist will work closely with the Center’s Climate, Oceans and Public Lands programs in developing and implementing actions and strategies focused on both reducing the Arctic melt and adapting wildlife management to the changing conditions of a warming Arctic.
Main duties:
- Engage in policy advocacy
- Interact with local, state, and federal agencies; scientists; other environmental organizations; and the public
- Draft reports, comments, petitions, and Web text
- Do media outreach
- Frequent travel is required
Essential qualities, qualifications, and skills:
- An advanced degree in a relevant scientific field
- Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- A demonstrated commitment to environmental protection
- An ability to work with lawyers and other staff members as part of an effective team
- A strong work ethic
- Familiarity with natural resource management and wildlife law is desired
